Finding someone who looks like you is usually pretty fun. If they look exactly like you, and try to break into your house? Well, you’re either in a Russian novel or are Reddit user throwawaydoppl.

To hear throwawaydoppl tell it, he’s spent the past few years being haunted by a being who looks exactly like him. In his first post on the subject, he says that his most direct encounters only began recently, “Early last month, this thing that looks and sounds EXACTLY like me begun to show itself directly to me.”

However, he also claims that his experiences with this entity go back much further. “About 4 years ago, my parents, grandmother and cousins were over at mine for a get together. I remember my mother going to smoke around the back,” he writes. “Not even a minute after going out, she comes back in all flustered and asking me why I was outside in the woods. She said I was staring at her blankly. The thing is, I wasn’t. I was inside with my grandmother and dad.”

This culminated in an experience last month, where he says he made direct eye contact with his doppelganger. “Last month while cleaning the kitchen, I saw me outside in the woods,” he swears. “It looked 1:1 with me.” He later claims to have heard his own voice asking to be let into his house.

Commenters suggested both the natural and supernatural. Many considered the idea that there was a gas leak in the house and encouraged him to install carbon monoxide detectors and cameras around his property. Others suggested that he attempt to kill the creature. All good options, really.

OP later posted a follow-up explaining that he planned to install cameras and CO detectors. He also answered some questions about the being: Yes, it was wearing his same clothes; no, he has no history of mental illness; and yes, this is actually real (though this is the internet, so take that with a grain of salt).

The most compelling theory offered by a commenter on this thread was the idea of “autoscopy.” Per a paper on the subject, “Autoscopy is thought to be a rare phenomenon in which a person visualizes or experiences a veritable hallucinatory image of his double.” Additional work on the subject attempts to draw some through-lines between different people’s autoscopic experiences, but in general, it appears to be one of those strange psychiatric phenomena that can just happen sometimes.

Good luck sleeping tonight!
