We all have that dish that spends more of its time in the bedroom than it ever has in the kitchen. For example, right now, I have two coffee cups on my desk. Tomorrow, there will probably be three, and that trend will continue until I finally get sick of wading through a pile of mugs every morning to get to my laptop and actually just wash the damn things.

While this may be understandable for dishes, I’m a little less forgiving of those who just leave food out. A pizza from the night before? Sure. But last week’s curry? Jesus, man, at least just throw it away!

But leaving food out is more than just gross. In fact, it can be deadly.

For example, this man on X/Twitter claims that his sister has been hoarding potatoes behind her bed. She’s 8, so we can forgive her for this behavior, but other X/Twitter users were quick to jump in and say that she should probably move the potatoes — or she could die.

As it turns out, hoarding potatoes can genuinely kill you, and there are documented cases of this happening. Back in 2013, a whole family was killed after they decided to store potatoes in their basement.

According to the Daily Mail, a Russian family (of course this happened in Russia) had been storing potatoes in their basement when some of them became dangerously rotten. One by one, family members entered the basement and were killed by the fumes of rotting potatoes. The only member of the family to survive was the youngest, also an 8-year-old girl.

So, time to take that food out of the bedroom — and check those potatoes.
