In what is perhaps one of the most stunning examples of “how the hell do people think of this shit,” someone has managed to recreate an entire Red Hot Chili Peppers album exclusively using sounds from Donkey Kong Country.
Fxsnowy, a musician and YouTuber, has blown our collective minds with their latest creation. Using soundfonts from Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 and 3, they’ve managed to reproduce the entirety of RHCP’s fifth studio album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
Far from sounding completely deranged and unlistenable, it actually sounds… kind of nice? It would work as background music for those looking for a hit of nostalgia, or indeed, background music while you’re gaming.
If you’re a fan, we’ve got good news for you: This isn’t the first RHCP album fxsnowy has given the Donkey Kong treatment to. They’ve previously recreated Californication using Donkey Kong Country 2 sounds — unsurprisingly, they say that DKC2 is their favorite video game OST.
Commenters were impressed, albeit slightly confused, with one writing, “I can say with 100 percent certainty that I wasn’t ready for this one.” Another, however, was far more effusive with their praise: “This is like some fever-induced dream where two major soundtracks of my childhood merge into one mind-bending blob of sound. It's amazing.”
These masterpieces are part of a larger trend in which creators reproduce their favorite albums using soundfonts from their favorite video games. Other examples include Weezer’s Blue album, but it’s Super Mario 64, or Green Day’s Nimrod but it’s Super Mario 64. (Evidently, Super Mario 64 is a popular source of inspiration for these creators.)
According to a comment left by fxsnowy on their video, By the Way is up next. So stay tuned to see when — and how — that will be game on.
