Though nearly every wild animal in Australia wants to kill you, one determined dog owner decided that his Akita would most definitely not succumb to the wrath of one apparently angry kangaroo, duking it out with the peeved marsupial to save his pup’s life.
Their beef began when Victoria-based MMA fighting instructor Mick Moloney lost sight of his dog Hatchi during a recent walk to a local river, instead, finding himself confronted with a “massive kangaroo” lurking between the reeds.

"I was like 'this thing's just got out of jail' or something,” he told ABC Radio Melbourne Afternoons of the moment he laid eyes on the jacked creature. After a few moments of awkward eye contact, Moloney discovered the kangaroo had been gripping his dog in a headlock, holding him below the river’s surface.
"Water was just gushing out of his mouth and he yelped quite badly,” he said. Despite the kangaroo’s intimidating size and wrath, Moloney sprang into action, attempting to scare the animal with a series of loud noises before embarking on a full-fledged fistfight over his pup’s life.
"Basically, slapped him across the head, and he jumped me and we ended up having a bit of a tussle in the water, lost my phone then found my phone" he remembered. “The kangaroo basically looked like it was about to kick the legs out at me. I splashed some water in its face and tried to take off and it had another go at me as I was leaving.”
But ultimately, the kangaroo conceded, Moloney managing to retrieve Hatchi and bring him back to safety.
"I got my dog back, that's the main thing,” he said, adding that some of his fighting clients have asked him to share his apparent "roo-jitsu” expertise.
We aren’t too sure what’s going on down in Australia, but this is the second time we’ve seen someone fight a kangaroo to save their dog, and we know it won’t be the last time either.
