Hippos are known for being mean and, believe it or not, incredibly deadly. The animal kills an estimated 500 people per year, which puts it significantly higher than other notoriously bite-y animals like sharks and lions.

Despite this, this zoo apparently decided to put their hippo in a containment area with the lowest fence possible and, when it opted to pop its massive head out of that area, the only solution the zookeeper came up with was to smack it across the jaw.
