NASA image of sun looking like a spooky Jack-o'-lantern

When you think of Halloween, the celestial body most often associated with the season is a big, spooky-lookin' full moon - the kind that werewolves can howl at and witches can cackle over.

NASA is here to remind you, however, that the sun can actually be pretty spooky in its own right, and they've released the image above to prove it.

What we're seeing is a colorized version of activity on the sun's surface, with some spots burning brighter than others. "They are markers of an intense and complex set of magnetic fields hovering in the sun's atmosphere, the corona," explains the NASA site. "This image blends together two sets of extreme ultraviolet wavelengths at 171 and 193 Ångströms, typically colorized in gold and yellow, to create a particularly Halloween-like appearance."
