Fans around the world mourned the loss of Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell earlier this week after he passed away at the age of 56. None mourned him as much as his family and friends did, however, including the remaining members of Smash Mouth, the 1990s band best known for songs like “All Star,” “Walkin’ on the Sun” and their cover of “I’m A Believer.”

On the day Harwell’s passing was announced, the band posted a heartfelt tribute on Twitter, calling Harwell a true “American Original” and closing out their message with, “Rest in peace knowing you aimed for the stars, and magically hit your target. Rest easy.”

Three days later, the band, already known for their entertaining tweets thanks to Harwell, adopted a slightly different approach to mourning their frontman. Quote tweeting a post from none other than Kim Kardashian herself, featuring photos of Kardashian posing in a mirror in a gold bikini and accompanied by the caption, “All that glitters is gold,” Smash Mouth added their two cents: “only shooting stars.”

Unless you’ve been in a coma for the past 25 years, you’ll know that the post is a reference to the band’s most famous song “All Star,” which was released in 1999 but found even more fame in 2001 after it was featured on the Shrek soundtrack. In recent years, the song has become a meme, with people often just posting snippets of the song’s lyrics and letting others’ brains fill in the rest.

Smash Mouth’s tweet, which Harwell would have loved, plays on the fact that Kardashian inadvertently quoted “All Star,” specifically the line, “All that glitters is gold,” which is then followed by, “Only shooting stars break the mold.”

While some thought the tweet was too soon, others pointed out that, “people saying ‘too soon’ really didn’t know steve and it shows lol,” a sentiment with which the band agreed.

Whether Kardashian is aware of her accidental tribute to Harwell is unclear, but considering she is a mother, she’s almost certainly seen Shrek more than once.

Just food for thot.
