On January 3rd, 2020, the U.S. military assassinated Iran's General Qasem Spleimani via a drone airstrike. 

Following the assassination and further developments such as President Trump tweeting out a low-res image of the American flag, WWIII memes started trending on Twitter and other social media sites. On Twitter, #WWIII became the number one trending topic the same day.
