The Art of Language
I ran across a pic in UCM's most recent MMR. It was a quote by the late George Orwell. I was already planning a blog of this nature but his quote became my catalyst...
"Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten. Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller."
George Orwell, 1984
In UCM's gallery the above quote was attached to Facebook's "Like" symbol. Clever actually :)
The reason I was thinking of blogging on this topic is a simple one...I enjoy the written/spoken word. Textspeak annoys me as do all the commercials on tv where they mash two words together. There is actually a word for that...Portmanteau. A Portmanteau is two words smushed together to make a new word that combines the meanings of the original two. For example.."brunch". Simple enough right? I will list some of the more popular ones. I want you to list the "not so" popular ones.
