Woman Who Always Wanted To Be Blind is Finally Blind Now

A woman in North Carolina--the smartest of the Carolinas--is blind and happy. But she wasn’t always that way. Jewel Schuping, 30, was born with the ability to see, but wasn’t happy about it. I mean, yeah, M. Night Shyamalan movies are bad, but actually wanting to be blind? Ms. Schuping in fact suffered from Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), a condition in which able-bodied people believe they are meant to be disabled.

Schuping said she’d been obsessed with being blind since she was a young child, but she didn’t specify if she’d walked in on her parents having sex. “By the time I was six I remember that thinking about being blind made me feel comfortable,” Schuping said. In her teens, she started wearing thick black sunglasses, and at 18 she got her first cane. At 20, Shuping was fluent in braille, and even though she didn’t play basketball she could tell you what one said.

“I was ‘blind-simming’, which is pretending to be blind, but the idea kept coming up in my head and by the time I was 21 it was a non-stop alarm that was going off,”

In 2006, Schuping got “professional help” from a psychologist, who put numbing eye drops into her eyes, followed by drops of drain cleaner. Dr. Eyevorkian (name changed to protect innocent eyeballs) was not available for comment.

“It hurt, let me tell you.” Shuping said. “My eyes were screaming and I had some drain cleaner going down my cheek burning my skin. But all I could think was ‘I am going blind, it is going to be okay,” which is the same thing I said when I was 12 and masturbated 16 times in one day.

“When I woke up the following day I was joyful,” she continued, “until I turned on to my back and opened my eyes – I was so enraged when I saw the TV screen,” even though at that point Khloe and Lamar were still together.

Schuping eventually had to have one eye removed while the other developed cataracts and glaucoma, which are bad. She told her family it was an accident, which is the same thing I said when I was 12 and masturbated 16 times in one day. Her mother and sister have since cut off contact however, perhaps not buying the “accident” story due to the whole cane-and-sunglasses thing. But Schuping says she sees no downside to her decision (obviously), and hopes her story will keep the public from turning a blind eye to victims of BIID. Plus, now she can audition for season two of Daredevil.
