For many, Napoleon Dynamite is the first movie they can remember their parents really not understanding. Much like how Easy Rider made a largely boring generation think that they had a biker/outlaw buried somewhere inside of them, Napoleon Dynamite spoke to something that the generations that came before it just didn’t quite get.

It really was the perfect tombstone to the slacker culture of the 1990s. The teen of the 2000s was still a loser, but instead of not giving a shit, they give a lot of a shit — and to show how much they cared, they were going to go all out, whether that meant dancing in front of the school or taking, like, three hours to finish the shading on the upper lip.
