1.
Keanu Reeves. In Speed, Director Jan de Bont refused to let him attempt the most dangerous stunt where his character Traven had to jump from a car onto the bus at high speeds. Keanu secretly rehearsed it, practicing tirelessly. On the day of the scene Keanu insisted on doing it himself almost gaving de Bont a heart attack but he executed it perfectly. -
2.
Jackie Chan. His long list of stunts are all dangerous, but in Who Am I, he had to slide down a 21-story building in Holland which was slanted about 45 degrees. If he had gotten this wrong, he would have died. -
3.
Daniel Craig. In Quantum of Solace, Craig was faced with one of the most challenging stunts yet, despite having performed most of them on his own in the previous movie, Casino Royale. He had to jump onto a moving bus from a 3-story building. The stunt was so dangerous because he had to know exactly when to jump-right before the bus would be underneath him. Had he missed the cue or jumped too soon, he would have either been run over or smashed on the ground. -
4.
Tom Cruise. Cruise is one of the biggest stunt masters in the industry, and is constantly pushing the limits on what he does for movies. Most recently, he held his breath for 6 minutes while filming an underwater scene for Mission:Impossible-Rogue Nation. -
5.
Buster Keaton. In the 1920’s film Sherlock Jr, he actually broke his neck in a scene with a water tank on a railroad. However, he topped that in a bit that involved a 2,000-pound, 3-story house that fell on top of him, and the only thing stopping him from getting crushed was a window that let him come into the house with just a few inches of room around him. -
6.
Jason Statham. Statham’s passion for stunt driving has led him to some very dangerous situations, and in Expendables 3, he actually drove a truck off the road and into the Black Sea. This wasn’t planned, he was actually supposed to drive the truck, stop it, get out and start shooting. However, the truck didn’t stop and he crashed into the water. Luckily, Statham is a former professional diver, and he escaped with ease. -
7.
Viggo Mortensen. Mortensen performed all of his own stunts in Lord of the Rings, and director Peter Jackson referred to him as ‘the Walking Wounded’ because of all of his injuries sustained. However his most dangerous stunt was in Hidalgo when he had to race horseback at breakneck speeds- the professional stuntmen wouldn’t even attempt it. -
8.
Harold Lloyd. Lloyd made nearly 200 films between the years of 1914 and 1947, and was known as a true daredevil. In 1919 he starred in Haunted Spooks where he had to carry around a prop bomb. The only problem was that it was actually functional, and it exploded. In the fiasco Lloyd lost his index finger and thumb. -
9.
Christian Bale. Bale did most of his own stunts as Batman, and swung from a helicopter in Red Dawn. However, the biggest stunt he did was crash dieting and losing 63 pounds in 4 months for his role in The Machinist. He only ate apples and drank coffee, and he said it was “very calming mentally.” Even though he got all the way down to 121 pounds, director Brad Anderson says he never asked Bale to do so. -
10.
Tom Cruise (again). In the beginning sequence for Mission:Impossible II Cruise came up with the idea to free climb Utah’s Dead Horse Point. Although he did have a safety harness on, he didn’t have a net underneath him. He actually injured his shoulder while jumping between rocks; all for the sake of Hollywood.
