After completing a 236 ft dive, Nicholas Mevoli surfaced, gave a thumbs up, then passed out. He never regained consciousness and died from pulmonary edema -

In 1943, SS troops and Nazi collaborators wiped out nearly the entire Belarusian town of Khatyn. Only 8 people survived. This is a statue dedicated to the massacre’s only adult survivor. He’d regained consciousness afterwards and found his burned son, who is said to have died in his arms. -
