The syphilis bacteria bores through tissue like a corkscrew, and eventually eats away at bone, skin, and brain, turning its victim into Romero-style zombie, minus the flesh-eating.

Here's another great closeup demonstrating the wonders of nature - the birth of a human bot fly. Bot flies reproduce by laying eggs inside the skin of living creatures, in this case humans. The eggs hatch and the larva eats its way back out of your skin to find freedom and begin the cycle anew.
