French tank gunner wearing a British Splatter Mask, October 12, 1918. The splatter mask was designed to help protect a tank crew member’s face from shrapnel when looking through the view ports. The mask was leather and had metal eye covers and a chainmail skirt to cover the mouth and chin. -

German POW’s being held at gunpoint by Polish resistance members during the Warsaw Uprising. August 20, 1944. The weapon being pointed is the Polish ‘Błyskawica’ submachine gun, which was Poland’s first ever successful SMG. The gun was a design combination of the British Sten gun and the German MP-40, using the best features of both. -

This is Emiliano Zapata, he was a leading figure during the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), during which he formed and commanded the Liberation Army of the South, an important revolutionary brigade. One of his most famous quotes was “I would rather die standing than live on my knees”. -

The iconic American wartime photograph “The Thousand Yard Stare” showing an exhausted 19-year-old US Marine Private Theodore J. Miller in February 1944 after two days of constant fighting at the Battle of Eniwetok. Miller would be killed in a firefight during the invasion of Ebon Atoll a month later on the 24 March 1944. -
