1.
Chris Gaines – Greatest Hits performed by Garth Brooks: $15 Million Garth Brooks wanted to create an experiment in 1999 that would blow the minds of his fans by performing as his alter-ego, Chris Gaines. Over 50 musicians were hired to perform on the album and promotion alone cost the label millions. The best part, the album was a complete flop. -
2.
My Bloody Valentine – Loveless: $500,000 This album was supposed to be created in 5 days, but instead stretched to two and a half years. -
3.
Queen – A Night at the Opera: $500,000 The band wanted to create something spectacular, so they hired on hundreds of people to provide backing vocals, choruses, and numerous other pieces, driving up their price tag. -
4.
Steely Dan – Gaucho: $1.1 Million A lot of drugs and a serious lawsuit left Steely Dan out over a million bucks. -
5.
Mariah Carey – Glitter: $28 Million Mariah had legal obligations to stay with one label, but when she divorced the owner, she needed to switch. Therefore millions of dollars had to be spent to have this album recorded in another studio due to the fact that she had to break her previous contract. -
6.
Fleetwood Mac – Tusk: $1.4 Million The high price tag of this album was attributed to the fact that their record company wouldn't let them leave the label. Instead, they spent all of that money to custom fit a studio at their current label which included purchasing sports cars and a lot of cocaine. -
7.
The Happy Mondays – Yes Please! Caused the label to declare bankruptcy. A huge string of drug induced incidents caused so much tension and betrayal amongst the band and the label that eventually they had to declare bankruptcy. -
8.
Tears for Fears – Seeds of Love: $1.5 Million Years of production made this project an expensive venture. Having started off in a studio with machines to help create their music, they eventually decided to leave that studio to follow a more human approach to the album. -
9.
The Darkness – One Way Ticket to Hell and Back Again $1.8 Million Regarded as the world’s most expensive penis joke, this album was just too complicated. After it was all said and done, over 400 reels of tape had been used for hundreds of guitar parts that never even saw the light of day. -
10.
Michael Jackson – Invincible: $30 Million This album took 5 years to record between three different studios. He had three studios so that he could decide between the three each day, depending on how he was feeling. -
11.
Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: $3 Million Of course Kanye would spend a bunch of money to produce an album. He rented a glass enclosed mansion in Honolulu to record this. That should explain a lot. -
12.
Korn – Untouchables: $4 Million You can blame the band’s lavish lifestyle for the expensive price tag, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on rent each month just to house the team. -
13.
Def Leppard – Hysteria: $4.5 Million This album had years of delays which forced the label to fork out millions of dollars to keep the project alive. -
14.
The Beach Boys – Smile (Single): $550,000 Sandwiches, weed, and LSD cost the band $220,000 alone. Adding the cost of production brought them to this high number… all for one song. -
15.
Guns N’ Roses – Chinese Democracy: $13 Million The fact that this album’s production was drawn out for 14 years is enough of an explanation for its expensive price tag.
