Cornerstone Apparel (owner of Papaya Clothing)- California-based teen retail chain, Papaya Clothing, filed for bankruptcy in June, facing liquidation problems. The bankruptcy filing was sought by its parent company, Cornerstone Apparel Inc., according to The Wall Street Journal.

Gordmans- Gordmans Stores, the century-old department store operator, filed for bankruptcy in March while announcing plans to liquidate the inventory of its 106 discount stores, according to Bloomberg.com.

True Religion- Jeans retailer True Religion filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July, announcing that it planned to close 27 of its 140 stores nationwide as the company restructures, according to USA Today.

BCBG- BCBG Max Azria, the women's clothing retailer known for its glitzy party dresses, filed for bankruptcy in March after closing 120 stores nationwide a few months earlier.

Perfumania- Perfumania, the self-proclaimed largest fragrance retailer in the country, filed for bankruptcy in August while announcing plans to shutter dozens of its 226 stores nationwide, according to CNN Money.

Gander Mountain- Gander Mountain, an outdoor retail chain, filed for bankruptcy in May, announcing plans to close all of its stores nationwide. The May filing came after having already filed bankruptcy a couple months earlier, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Gymboree- Children's apparel retailer, Gymboree, filed for bankruptcy in June shortly before announcing that it would be closing about 350 stores nationwide.

Eastern Outfitters- Eastern Outfitters, the outdoor sporting goods retailer and parent of discount chain Bob’s Stores, filed for bankruptcy in February.

Alfred Angelo- The once popular bridal shop, Alfred Angelo, filed for bankruptcy in July shortly after an abrupt nationwide shutdown of its stores and telling customers that it would not be able to fulfill customer orders.

hhgregg- Indianapolis-based electronics store, hhgregg, filed for bankruptcy in March after shuttering 88 locations nationwide.

Payless ShoeSource- Discount shoe store chain, Payless ShoeSource, filed for bankruptcy in April. Shortly after, the company closed hundreds of stores nationwide.

Wet Seal- The Wet Seal, the teen apparel retailer, filed for bankruptcy in February after closing more than 330 stores nationwide.

Vanity- Vanity, the Fargo-based women’s clothing retailer, filed for bankruptcy in March, announcing plans to close 140 locations nationwide after more than 50 years in business, according to USA Today.

The Limited- The Ohio-based women's clothing company, The Limited, filed for bankruptcy in January after announcing that it would be closing all of its 250 retail stores in the country.

Rue21- Rue21, the Pennsylvania-based teen clothing retailer, filed for bankruptcy in May after announcing it planned to shutter around 400 stores and concentrate on online sales.

Vitamin World- Vitamin World Inc., the vitamin and supplements retailer, filed for bankruptcy in September while announcing plans to shutter dozens of underperforming locations, according to The Wall Street Journal.

RadioShack- In March, RadioShack, the one-time dominant electronics retailer, filed for bankruptcy for the second time in two years. In June, the electronics retailer then closed more than 1,000 stores nationwide.

Aerosoles- Edison, NJ based women's footwear chain, Aerosoles, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September, announcing that it planned to close a "significant" number of its 88 stores.

Toys 'R' Us- Toys 'R' Us toy retailer filed for bankruptcy protection in September, just as the holiday season approaches.
