It is important to be confident in life. It is also important to be smart. These people unfortunately had one, but not the other, leading them to be quite confidently incorrect. They say that people who are truly wise realize that they don't know anything at all. To be wise, is to know what you don't know. However, doing so takes a level of humility and acceptance of ones shortcomings that those capable of doing so often do not possess the same level of self confidence of those who think they know everything. And why shouldn't they be confident? They think they know everything.
This unfortunate paradox of intelligence leads many people who are wrong to be so confidently, and many people who are right to be so reservedly. Thus, people are often more likely to believe those who are wrong because of the tone in which they speak. The only possible reaction is unfortunately a facepalm.
