Why Do Russian Cosmonauts Pee On A Tire Before Space Launches? It is Tradition! Before cosmonauts board the Soyuz capsule, they take a moment to relieve themselves at the right tire of bus set to drive them to the launch site. This superstitional tradition started in 1961, when Yuri Gagarin, the first man who was in space, had to relieve himself before flight. Most probably it was done out of necessity. Other cosmonauts started to emulate him and now it is traditional for male cosmonauts to urinate on the tire. Female cosmonauts usually don't take part in that tradition, but they have been known to bring along urine in vials to splash on the tire. -
