Maddox Derkosh, a two year old boy, was mauled to death by African painted dogs at the Pittsburg Zoo in 2012. His mother admitted to holding him out above an observation deck to get a better view of the dogs, before he suddenly lurched forward and fell into the enclosure. An autopsy confirmed he didn't die from the fall, but rather from being savagely ripped apart by the wild dogs. -

In 2011, 19 year old Olga Moskalyova called her mother from the woods in Eastern Siberia as she was being attacked by a brown bear and her three cubs. Tatiana, her mother, listened in distress while Olga was eaten alive by the bears. At first she thought it was a joke, but she soon heard the sounds of the bears growling and chewing. Tatiana contacted nearby police, who rushed to the river where the attack was taking place. Not only did Olga die in the attack, but when authorities arrived, her father Igor's remains were still being devoured nearby. -

Tilikum, a killer whale at SeaWorld, struck for the third time in 2010 when he grabbed the ponytail of his trainer, Dawn Brancheau, and dragged her to the bottom of the pool. Tilikum's violent thrashing fractured Brancheau's jaw, part of her vertebrae, several ribs, and dislocated her elbow. She did not survive the attack. In 1991, trainer Keltie Lee Byrne fell into the enclosure holding Tilikum and two other whales at Sealand in Canada. It was found that the whales prevented her from escaping the enclosure, and her death was ruled an accident. Once again after being transferred to SeaWorld in 1999, the body of Daniel Dukes was found naked and draped over Tilikum's body in the enclosure. It was reported that Dukes got past security and stayed at the park after it had closed. He then either jumped or fell into Tilikum's pool. -

Former Miss Teen USA, Taylor Hubbard, was attending a junior prom after party when she encountered a siberian husky. As she stroked the dog's head, it suddenly reared back and then lunged in for an attack. The dog latched onto her face around her mouth and began shaking her head like a chew toy. It took 200 stitches to repair Hubbard's gaping wounds, and her teeth and jaw were also broken. She survived the attack and recieved laser scar removal treatment. -

In 2003, bear enthusiast Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were killed and partially eaten by a grizzly bear in Katmai National Park. At some point, he heard a bear outside the tent. He went out to see it with his camera on, but the lens still capped. The bear began attacking him and six minutes of audio can be found online of him shouting to his girlfriend, and his girlfriend yelling back to play dead. -

In 2009, Travis the chimpanzee attacked his owner's 55 year old friend, Charla Nash. After seeing Nash holding one of his favorite toys, he lunged at her and latched onto her face. Herold, the owner, began stabbing Travis with a butcher knife. Travis was later found dead next to his cage. Nash lost her eyes, lips, hands, and mid-face bone structure in the attack, as well as recieving significant brain-tissue damage. As a result, she has since recieved a full-face transplant. -

12 year old Brian Jeffrey Griffin was swimming in a Florida river when his friends suddenly began screaming for him to get out of the water. His two friends saw the estimated 11 foot alligator swimming towards Griffin, but it was too late. It grabbed the boy and retreated beneath the surface of the water. Witnesses say it surfaced at least once with Griffin still in its jaws. The body was later recovered, and seven alligators between 8 and 11 feet were killed and examined in an attempt to match teeth patterns to the bites on the boy. -

In 2003 a 7 year old white tiger named Montecore attacked performer Roy Horn of Siegfried and Roy during a performance on the Las Vegas strip. The attack left him with a brain injury that led to a stroke, and as a result Roy is partially paralyzed. After the brain injury, the tiger grabbed Roy in what he describes as a manner in which a tiger would pick up her cub, and dragged him off to the side of the stage. It is then that one of the tiger's teeth knicked an artery in Roy's neck, causing massive blood loss. To this day, he does not blame the tiger for the attack and Montecore has since passed away from illnesses at age 17. -

A grizzly bear named Rocky that appeared in a Will Ferrel movie attacked Steven Miller, an experienced trainer, during a stunt in 2008. The bear bit Miller in the neck and had to be subdued with pepper spray. Unfortunately Miller died from the puncture wounds in his neck about 25 minutes after the attack occured. -

In 2011 a leopard strayed into Salugara Village and severely injured several policemen and forest guards when they tried to tranquilise it. When they raised an alarm, it startled the leopard and it tried to flee, injuring five villagers in the process. The leopard also sustained injuries, as policemen used batons and knives in an attempt to save their collegues. The leopard later died in veterinary care while its injuries were being treated. -

Andrew Oberle, a 26 year old graduate student, was standing in a restricted area of a chimpanzee enclosure for which he did not have clearance when he was pulled under an electrified fence by two male chimpanzees. The incident in 2012 left Oberle fighting for his life while they bit him and dragged him half a mile in an act of territorial defence. He lost an ear, a testicle, several fingers and toes, lacerations on his legs, and his flesh was eaten down to the bone on his arms. After 22 surgeries and impossible odds, Oberle made a full recovery. -

In 2012 a zookeeper whose identity was kept hidden was killed by the very pack of wolves she raised at the Kolmarden Zoo in Sweden. The keeper reportedly followed standard procedure and notified a coworker before entering the wolf enclosure, which she had been doing since they were pups. When other employees couldn't reach her over her radio, they went to check on her and found her already dead inside the enclosure. Officials had difficulty safely recovering her remains. The zoo staff were forced to make a human chain to usher the wolves away from her remains, and they eventually had to be given sedatives so that the ambulance workers could enter to recover what was left of the zookeeper's body. -

Jaren Hare and Charles Darnell were both sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2009 for manslaughter and child neglect when their 8 and a half foot albino burmese python escaped its enclosure and entered their toddler's room in the middle of the night. The python's tank only had a quilt for a lid and was kept just 12 feet from two year old Shaianna's bedroom. The snake slithered into her crib where it wrapped around her body and crushed her to death. Their were also several puncture marks on the length of her body indicating the python had tried to swallow her whole. -

Christmas of 2007, a female siberian tiger was killed in a hail of gunfire after killing 17 year old Carlos Sousa Jr. and injuring two of his friends. Claw marks were found at the top wall of its enclosure at the San Francisco Zoo, indicating that the tiger was able to get enough leverage to leap up from the dry moat at the bottom and pull itself out. Zoo officials claim the boy must have really agitated the tiger, as she walked right past easily accessible hogs that would make a great food source, and instead followed Sousa's trail. -

World famous Steve Irwin died in 2006 when his heart was pierced by the barb of a stingray during the filming of an underwater documentary. Irwin was in the water when he swam too close to a stingray, its tail came up, and the poisonous serrated barb pierced through his chest. He was then videotaped pulling the barb out, which many speculate is what sealed his fate. -

Phil Bronstein suffered a komodo dragon attack while at the L.A. Zoo with his wife, actress Sharon Stone. Shortly before the attack, Bronstein was advised to remove his white sneakers, as they resembled the white rats that the dragons were fed. Inside the cage with a zookeeper, one of the komodo dragons then lunged at Bronstein's foot and clamped down, severing tendons and crushing the casing of his big toe. After surgery, medication and antibiotics, he made a full recovery. -

Bethany Hamilton was only 13 when a tiger shark bit her left arm off up to the armpit as she lie on her surfboard. She says it all happened so fast. One moment she was lying there wishing the surf would pick up. Then suddenly, pressure and a few lightning fast tugs. She looks to her left and sees a pool of blood spreading out around her. Despite losing her entire left arm and 60 percent of her blood, she survived the attack and was surfing again less than a month later. -

During a religious festival in southern India, an elephant became enraged after seeing the mistreatment of another elephant nearby. The elephant killed its handler before rampaging around the area injuring 18 other people. Video footage from the 2007 attack shows the graphic incident. The elephant carries its trainer in its trunk as it charges through frantic crowds of people. -

Wesley Perkins was on a hunting trip in Alaska in 2011, when he got off his snowmobile to take pictures and was promptly attacked by a charging angry grizzly bear. The bear grabbed his head and began mauling him, but his friends were quick and shot the bear dead within 30 seconds of the attack. Perkins survived after 26 surgeries. Despite losing half of his tongue, he speaks about the incident. He said he remembers pulling chunks of his torn apart face from his own throat so he could breathe. -

94 year old Phyllis Johnson was taking down laundry from the line in her backyard in 2011 when a kangaroo came at her. It knocked her down and kicked her several times before she was able to get back up and grab a broom to defend herself. Hitting the kangaroo several times, she ran to the safety of her flat to get her son to call police. He attempted to pepper spray the animal to subdue it, but realizing it was only angering the kangaroo even more, he was forced to call in National Parks and Wildlife officers to capture it. Phyllis was hospitalised with several scratches and a chunk of her leg missing, but made a full recovery. -

In 2011 a starving and emaciated polar bear in a Norwegian archipelago attacked a party of school children organised by the British Schools Exploring Society. 17 year old Horatio Chapple died in the attack and four others were hurt. The bear was shot dead by one of the expedition's leaders, Spike Reid, who himself suffered severe head and face injuries. -

Jenna Donley, a 25 year old veterenarian, died from her injuries in 2011 when she was gored by an endangered pygmy elephant during a trip to a Malaysian wildlife reserve. She reportedly got within 30 feet of the animal to take photographs, which may have alarmed it causing it to charge at her. -

A pack of hyenas killed two children and injured six other family members when they attacked the sleeping family in their home in Kenya in 2012. One 10 year old boy was airlifted to Nairobi and lives with facial disfigurements from the attack. Rangers pursued and eliminated the aggressive pack of hyenas to prevent future incidents. -

Darla Napora, a pregnant wife and owner of two pitbulls, was a member of Bay Area Dog Lovers Responsible About Pitbulls, an organization dedicated to convince people that pitbulls are not dangerous. In 2011, her husband Greg left while she was sleeping in bed with her dogs, Gunner and Tazi. When he returned, he found Darla lying in a pool of blood and Gunner, also covered in Darla's blood, hovering over her. He called an ambulance and got Gunner into the backyard, but it was too late to save Darla. The baby also perished in the attack. When police arrived on the scene, Gunner was shot several times after he approached them. Despite the killing of his wife and baby-to-be, Greg maintains that pitbulls are harmless dogs and he forgives Gunner for the incident.
