Super Bowl Sunday is the second-biggest day for food consumption in the US. Thanksgiving is the first.

This year’s game has the greatest age gap between QBs ever in a Super Bowl: thirteen years. Peyton Manning, the Broncos quarterback, is thirty-nine, the oldest starting QB in Super Bowl history, and Cam Newton, the Panthers quarterback, is twenty-six.

Peyton Manning was the no. 1 draft pick in 1998; Cam Newton was the no. 1 pick in 2011. This is the first Super Bowl between quarterbacks picked no. 1 overall in the draft, just in case you were curious.

Cam Newton might be the current MVP of the NFL but Peyton Manning is the player with the most MVP Award victories in the history of the sport with five.

The Broncos are tied for the most Super Bowl appearances with eight. The other teams that have made it to the game eight times are the New England Patriots (4–4), the Pittsburgh Steelers (6–2), and the Dallas Cowboys (5–3).

Cam Newton is trying to become the third quarterback to win both a college football national championship and a Super Bowl as a starter. Joe Montana and Joe Namath are the other two.

Additionally, Newton will try to become the second African American quarterback to win a Super Bowl and be named the game’s MVP. The first was Redskins’ Doug Williams in Super Bowl XXII.

In 2007, Tony Dungy became the first black coach to win the Super Bowl. The Indianapolis Colts coach competed against his friend and protégé Lovie Smith, making them the first two black coaches to lead the game.

Super Bowls account for twenty-one of the most watched programs in American TV history in terms of total audience.

However, despite being America’s most popular and viewed sporting event, not a single Super Bowl ranks in the top 20 most watched sporting events worldwide.

Super Bowl XLIX (last year’s Super Bowl) was the most watched program in American TV history, surpassing the previous year’s game. The game was seen by an average of 114.4 million viewers, peaking at 120.8 million during New England’s fourth-quarter comeback.

Last year we also witnessed the largest fourth-quarter comeback in history. Tom Brady’s Patriots were behind 24–14 when they entered the field for the fourth quarter and ended up winning 28–24.

Beginning in 1991 the halftime show began to feature pop music acts such as New Kids on the Block and Gloria Estefan. In an effort to boost the prominence of the halftime show to increase viewer interest, Super Bowl XXVII featured a headlining performance by Michael Jackson. After Super Bowl XXXVIII’s halftime show (in which Justin Timberlake accidentally exposed one of Janet Jackson’s nipples) the halftime show began to feature classic rock acts until the return of headlining pop stars in 2011.

Beyoncé and Coldplay are headlining tonight’s halftime. Last year, the halftime show was the most watched ever (118.5 million viewers), as Katy Perry performed with Missy Elliot and Lenny Kravitz.

Chuck Noll of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots are the two head coaches with the most Super Bowl wins in history with four each. Belichick also shares the record for most appearances (six) with Don Shula.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have won six Super Bowls, more than any other team in history. They won Super Bowl IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, and XLIII.

During Super Bowl XLVII, two brothers – John Harbaugh and Jim Harbaugh – were the head coaches of the opposing teams (Baltimore Ravens v San Francisco 49ers). It was the first time this happened in Super Bowl history, and also the first time in any postseason game for all four major sports. For the record, John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens won.

Matt Stover is a placekicker and the oldest player to participate and score in a Super Bowl. At Super Bowl XLIV, Stover made history when he scored at the age of forty-two years and eleven days old.

Jerry Rice holds the record for most points scored in Super Bowl history with forty-eight and most touchdowns with eight.

Joe Montana and Tom Brady share the record for most Super Bowl MVP Awards with three each. Brady also holds the record for most games started with six, winning four.

The cost of placing a commercial during the Super Bowl is more expensive than for any other television event. To give you an idea how much it costs keep in mind that the cost of a thirty-second commercial during Super Bowl l in 1967 was $37,500 but the cost of a thirty-second commercial for Super Bowl XLIX was a record $4.5 million.

The highest-priced ticket to Super Bowl I was $12. The most expensive ticket to last year’s game was about $17,800.
