Jay-Z released Magna Carta Holy Grail, Kanye released Yeezus, Drake released Nothing Was the Same, and next month Eminem will release The Marshal Mathers LP 2. Those are some big names. Whats interesting, though, is that none of the artwork for these albums caused any controversy. Laughter? Oh yes, they caused that. But not controversy. This didnt use to be the case. There was a time where the covers of rap albums were almost as controversial as the content, if not more so. And today were going to take a look at some of them. -

By the late 90s, people apprently forgot about the gangsta rap from earlier in the decade, because when Eminem released The Slim Shady LP it was like he was the first person to come along and say crazy stuff in a rap record. Not to get overly sociological or anything, but maybe the strong reaction to Slim had to do with his race? Hmm.In any case, the album cover was pretty shocking: those are supposed to be his wifes feet hanging out the back of the trunk, there. Listen to the track 97 Bonnie Clyde. -

The N.W.A. was already the most controversial rap act of all-time by 1991, what with songs like Fk the Police. However, they really ratcheted things up a notch with their 1991 album. You see, there was no way they were going to be able to sell an album called Naz4Life. So instead they called it Efil4zaggin. Clever, but it still pissed off a lot of angry white suburban moms.
