32 Prison Electronics Straight Off a Y2K Mood Board

Prisons and detention centers often use electronics with a certified Y2K aesthetic: Transparent cases to deter smuggling and hiding contraband.

See-through electronics were first introduced in prisons in the 70s and 80s but only made it to consumer products in the 90s and 00s, where the trend died down until a modest resurgence in the past few years’ Y2K revival.

Below you’ll find examples of TVs, radios, computers, and gaming consoles, and more that scream “Y2K mood board” more than they do prison tech. These evoke feelings of nostalgia for the colorful G3 iMacs, N64s, and the Game Boy Clear of my childhood (which incidentally can be found in some prisons too).
