This village in Sanmenxia, China is unique. it is almost completely underground. -

The reason for this are mostly earthquakes that are frequent here. -

Though rarely seen today, the underground village boasts a history of over 4,000 years, and was once a prevailing residence in West Henan Province, South Shanxi Province, North Shaanxi Province and East Gansu Province on the vast Loess Plateau along the Yellow River. Today, the residence is largely remaining on the outskirts of Sanmenxia City in the western part of Henan Province. -

The depth of a cave courtyard is 6 to 7 meters, and each side of the courtyard is 10 to 12 meters long. Usually eight to twelve caves are dug on the four sides. -

The hoses have bedrooms, bathrooms, storeroom and even a stable. -

It takes about 2 years to make one, and it should last 200 years. -

The temperature is 12-20 Celsius, and the characteristics help the house to keep warmth in winter and give it away during hot summer. -
