The story begins in 1916 when they got funds to build the place under Central Parkway. -
2.
This was the plan. -
3.
But the first World War halted the project. -
4.
The project restarted in 1920 but because of high inflation the money quickly ran out. -
5.
The crisis in 1929 was another deep blow. -
6.
When the second World War came the project was practically dead. -
7.
They build about 7 miles of tunnels. -

Here are some photos. -

The place looks rather good because the city has to make sure the tunnels won't collapse. -
12.
The city made necessary calculations in 2008 and it turned out the tunnels cost about 2,6 million dollars yearly. -
13.
Filling the tunnels to make sure the won't collapse would cost 19 million dollars. -
14.
And finishing the works making the subway a real working form of transport would cost 100 million dollars. -
15.
That costs were accurate in 2008 mind you, and can be bigger today. -
16.
Either way it's 2016 and we still don't know what will happen to the tunnels. Will the subway project "die" in the end or will it be rejuvenated and turn into a working subway in its 100 anniversary?
