With games like Skyrim, Borderlands, and Fallout on the rise, a new breed of RPG has arrived. Although these games are top notch I still find myself looking back to Classic RPGs with turn based combat. Here are a few games from my early years that possibly changed my views of what games could be.

In my opinion one of the best games and stories ever told. Probably didn't hurt much that it was also the first RPG I ever played. -

Great story and protagonist with graphics we had never seen before in an RPG. This game in its time changed everything. I also loved the materia system which was sadly never used again. -

This game was highly under rated in the US, which was sad because its for sure in my top three RPGs. Oh yeah and all those characters, yeah you can play every one. 108 to be exact. -

I ordered this game from ebay full pricedused that's how much I wanted to get my hands on and try this masterpiece. It also has over a hundred characters and a few from the first return. Great to see them and the partnerships they created from the first. -

This game redefined its series and pushed it to a whole other level. This and A Link to the past were epic. -

This game has a unique battle system unlike other Final Fantasy's. Characters also had jobs they could switch to become stronger. Great game once you get over the learning curve. -

Certainly where Final Fantasy Tactics took their some of their inspiration. Great game for the sega genesis which was certainly lacking in the RPG department. -

Another great playstation RPG which was turn based. What made this one original was the combo system. You simply matched up the right button at the right time to rack up combos and destroy your enemies. -
