"Many Pennies for Mike," figured he needed about $28,000 for four years of university. Not only did Hayes received pennies but he was also gifted in nickels from people all over the world. Hayes received $1,000 above what he asked which he planned to donate to another university student in need of tuition money.

In 1980 the Supreme Court awarded the Sioux tribe 106 million dollars as compensation for land that was taken from them. The Sioux refused to accept the payment, and the money remains in the US Treasury to this day, accruing interest. $106 million dollar figure was based on the land value of 1877: The Supreme Court awarded eight Sioux tribes $106 million in compensation—the 1877 value of $17.5 million, plus interest. The Sioux Nation has refused to accept the award, saying they want their land returned. The money is held in accounts at the Treasury Department, accruing interest. As of 2011, the accounts are estimated to be valued at over $1 billion.

A 66-year-old hiker, who became lost on the Appalachian Trail, kept a journal documenting her 26-day ordeal before succumbing to lack of food and exposure. On one torn-out page, dated August 6, Largay wrote: “When you find my body, please call my husband George and my daughter Kerry. “It will be the greatest kindness for them to know that I am dead and where you found me – no matter how many years from now. “Please find it in your heart to mail the contents of this bag to one of them.”
