This is Bulletproof Oakley. When Oakley was just a few months old, he was dumped at a local shelter by his then owners. They claimed that he was born without the use of his lower body and that they were surrendering him because they didn’t want the burden of raising a disabled dog.

This is Bulletproof Oakley. When Oakley was just a few months old, he was dumped at a local shelter by his then owners. They claimed that he was born without the use of his lower body and that they were surrendering him because they didn’t want the burden of raising a disabled dog. -

Almost immediately, rescuers put Oakley through a series of tests to determine what was wrong with his lower body. While doing a routine x-ray, they discovered that Oakley wasn’t born disabled. He lost the use of his lower body because he took a bullet to the spine. -

After being shot and then surrendered by his owner, Oakley’s luck changed for the better. The local shelter posted Oakley’s photo and backstory on social media, where it instantly caught the attention of rescue worker Kristie Karcanes. -

She immediately took interest in the little guy and arranged to meet the pup. -

Karcanes took the pup in as a foster, but inevitably ended up adopting him because…well, look at that face. -

Oakley didn’t seem to mind his new digs. -

And his new siblings clearly warmed up to him. -

Caring for Oakley, though, proved to be even more of a challenge than Karcanes originally thought. -

Oakley took to chewing on his own paws, which eventually led to amputation. -

But that’s not going to slow down a dog with ‘Bulletproof’ in his name. -

While Oakley had a rocky start to life, he’s clearly doing better with his new family. His owner, Karcanes, has devoted a large portion of her time to raising awareness of animal abuse via her Facebook page.
