Pirates spent many days on water, but it turns out their eating habits are different from those who sailed legally. -

Salmagundi was a dish of chopped meat, anchovies, eggs, onions, and seasoning. It was popular because it had the proper vitamins, but also because it was an easy way to make sure meat won't spoil. -

As for the drink- rum, of course. White rum is very popular now, but it was non-existent up to XVII century. The rum before XVII century was stronger and more a thick substance. -

Grog was popular among honest sailors and pirates preferred "bumboo" a drink made of rum, water, sugar and nutmeg, sometimes cinnamon and coconut water. -

The captains very often considered grog or bumboo the cheap stuff and went for "rumfastian" instead. Rumfastian was a blend of beer, gin, sherry, raw eggs, and spices.. -

As for beer... it spoiled too quickly so pirates drank beer only in taverns. -

Pirates often had live cows and chickens on board so there would be fresh milk and eggs. They also caught fish and turtles, yes they ate turtles. Bread was scarce, mostly seen in said taverns. -

They also had some storerooms filled with pickled bacon. -

Fruits and vegetables were hard to find on ships, but pirates stopped by on islands to hunt wild boars pick or buy vegetables and fruits; potatoes were very popular, mostly sweet batatas.
