In 2011, Mitch saved the life of a woman he was traveling with. He pushed her to safety before their car slammed into a 10,000 volt pylon. Thousands of volts of electricity hit him for five minutes straight. His injuries were incredibly severe, and the intense shock cost him both his leg and part of his face.

After the tragedy, Hunter was heartbroken to realize that his infant son was afraid of him and his injuries.

That's when he decided to undergo a face transplant.

A team of 30 doctors and nurses tackled the surgery, spending over 14 hours transplanting a new face onto Hunter's.

Doctors gave Hunter a new nose, lips, and eyelids.

They also transplanted the muscles and nerve fibers necessary for him to move his face and feel sensation. In this photo, he sees himself for the first time after surgery.
