This is an old photo of Mitch Hunter, a former soldier in the United States military. -

In 2011, Mitch saved the life of a woman he was traveling with. He pushed her to safety before their car slammed into a 10,000 volt pylon. Thousands of volts of electricity hit him for five minutes straight. His injuries were incredibly severe, and the intense shock cost him both his leg and part of his face. -

After the tragedy, Hunter was heartbroken to realize that his infant son was afraid of him and his injuries. -

That's when he decided to undergo a face transplant. -

A team of 30 doctors and nurses tackled the surgery, spending over 14 hours transplanting a new face onto Hunter's. -

Doctors gave Hunter a new nose, lips, and eyelids. -

They also transplanted the muscles and nerve fibers necessary for him to move his face and feel sensation. In this photo, he sees himself for the first time after surgery. -

In fact, his recovery was much more miraculous than the doctors let themselves hope for. -

Slowly but surely, his new face began to heal. -

Though it must be strange looking differently than before, the alternative was much, much worse. -

Amazingly, he can even grow facial hair. -

His 5-year recovery represents huge progress in the realm of facial transplant surgery. -

“I feel just as healthy just as I did when I was 21, and I feel great. I look back on it as something that made me stronger," Hunter commented on his social media. -

The best part? His son is no longer afraid of his brave, heroic father, and the pair can go on to have a happy life together.
