No matter where you are, renting an apartment sucks. In cities like New York, people line up for blocks to find a decent deal on a place, and even the worst buildings can go for several million dollars.

For less in-demand cities, things aren’t much better. You still have to deal with bad landlords who will try to steal your security deposit, poor maintenance of a building over time and a litany of other issues for which there’s little recourse besides casting your fists into the air and cursing God.
