New photos have emerged five years after the accident at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima. -
2.
Photos depict a real post-apocalyptic wasteland where nature once again dominates the landscape. -
3.
People evacuated the area after the disaster in 2011 leaving cars, homes and other buildings abandoned. -
4.
160,000 people were evacuated from the city and only 40,000 of them have been allowed to return to their homes since. -
5.
Arkadiusz Podniesinski is a professional photographer from Poland who braved the disaster zone to bring back these stunning pictures. -
6.
“My goal was to present the actual state of the exclusion zone”. -
7.
“Futaba, Namie and Tomioka are ghost towns whose emptiness is terrifying and show a tragedy that affected hundreds of thousands of people.”. -
8.
The disaster was caused by a 50 foot tsunami that hit Fukushima after an earthquake. -
9.
The evacuation was sudden leaving behind fully stocked supermarkets (now home to giant cobwebs) and abandoned cars still sitting in traffic. -
10.
20,000 workers are currently working spraying the walls and roofs of every building in an attempt to make Fukushima habitable again. -
11.
The soil is also contaminated and the top layer needed to be removed and disposed of. -
12.
The bottom layers of soil are cleaned in an extremely laborious process. -
13.
Although Podniesinski is sympathetic to those that lost their homes and lives he knows exactly what’s to blame. -
14.
“Humans are to blame for the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. This disaster could have been foreseen and prevented.”
